Thomas Wähling, based on his long-term experience in European financial institutions, started to work as an independent consultant in 2004 and introduced the label finval in early 2006.

Previously, having started his career with a “top-four” audit firm in 1994, Thomas worked for several banks in Luxembourg and Switzerland, dealing with strategically relevant topics as corporate development, M&A-related projects, performance analysis, as well as the integration / coordination of foreign subsidiaries in different European countries. In 2002, Thomas became “Head of Business Development Europe” in a major Swiss bank, after having completely reviewed the strategy of onshore Private Banking initiatives in five European countries.

Thomas has served a large number of clients on the financial sector, from Retail over Private and Corporate to selected Investment Banking areas and a wide range of Asset Management businesses - his functional focus being on corporate development, corporate governance, financial and risk management, compliance, as well as in translating shareholder's interests and strategic corporate objectives into personal incentives. The specificity of his work relies in the capacity to holistically design solutions (many times, from scratch) at corporate / business area levels and then to "bring them down to earth" by means of operating models and processes that can be handled in practice.

Since 2007 Central and Eastern European markets have progressively become an additional pillar of Thomas’ activities. Next to different activities in other Eastern European countries, Thomas, from June 2011 to December 2012 worked on two assignments in Moscow - first,  leading the "Russia Onshore Growth Program" for Credit Suisse, and afterwards as Head Corporate Architecture for TNK-BP, until the sale of this major Russian oil company to Rosneft was announced.

Having been invited repeatedly since 2005 by the University of St. Gallen as a guest lecturer in "Valuation of Financial Insitutions" and "Incentive Compensation Design", Thomas since 2009 also serves the University of Zurich (Swiss Banking Institute) as a guest lecturer in "Corporate Control Transactions" and the University of Berne regarding “Valuation of Financial Institutions”.

Thomas holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Cologne. Having spent most of his life abroad, Thomas is fluent in German, Spanish, French, English, and Russian.
